Congress is showing renewed interst in full-body digital scanners after the Christmas day scare in a jet over Detroit. Even though they are not entirely reliable, well-connected lobbyists are pushing for their use and Senate hearings have been scheduled.

A 14-year-old girl in Britain died shortly after receiving her HPV vaccine Monday. Drug maker, GlaxoSmithKline has isolated that batch of the Cervarix vaccine. Cervarix is a direct competitor to Gardasil (Merck) and is seeking U.S. approval. The Gardasil vaccine is also thought to be responsible for a number of deaths.

Head and neck cancer patients who test positive for the human papillomavirus (HPV) have a better survival rate than patients that don’t have the virus, according to new research published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research.

A study in the British medical journal, The Lancet, finds the Gardasil rival drug for human papillomavirus, Cervarix is effective against five viruses, two most common virus types that cause HPV or human papillomavirus as well as three of the next most common cervical cancer causers. The study was funded by the vaccine maker, GlaxoSmithKline.

Circumcision reduced cases of herpes and human papillomavirus in Ugandan men, say researchers from Johns Hopkins. Circumcision is already known to reduce HIV infections. Researchers are calling for higher circumcision rates.

16-year-old Ashley Ryburn received one Gardasil vaccine along with a meningitis shot. Then she received another Gardasil shot, her second in the three-series vaccines.  She is now disabled, in pain, faints, has numb legs, not at all the athlete she used to be.

U.S. Marshals seized 11 lots of Heparin from Celsus Laboratories Inc. The FDA found the products, manufactured from material imported from China, to be contaminated with OSCS, a substance that imitates heparin’s blood thinning activity.

The CDC and FDA are both promoting the use of Gardasil in an unprecedented way.  Reporting on the two-year post-approval monitoring the the drug, the CDC says its safe and the 20 plus deaths are not related to the vaccine.
