The National Institute on Aging is researching ways to slow the aging process. In one experiment, lab mice given the antibiotic, rapamycin, were found to have their life extended, for females by 14 percent, even though the drug was given later in life, at the equivalent of age 60 in humans.

A new study finds the risk of developing dementia may depend on your personality - the calm and centered types had a 50 percent reduced risk versus the neurotic and agitated.  Social isolation seems to make a difference as well.

Spikes in blood sugar levels can take a toll on memory by affecting the dentate gyrus, a region of the brain within the hippocampus that helps to form memories. The effects can be seen even when levels of blood sugar, or glucose, are only moderately elevated, a finding that may help to explain normal age-related cognitive decline

Earlier studies have found exercise helps prevent cognitive decline and maintains the brain as people age. New research suggests people who engage in long-term, regular exercise had substantially more small blood vessels in their brains and more blood flow than people who performed little exercise over the years.

A new study, found men and women over 50 expects the desire for and ability to have sex to lessen with age. The findings also suggest women were more likely to be surprised and less prepared for physical changes.

Glucosamine and chrondroitin offer many sufferers of osteoarthritis relief from pain. But research from the National Institutes of Health, Alternative Medicine division find that the natural supplements have mixed results, largely disappointing.  Some of the researchers take fees from pharmaceutical giants, the research discloses.

California becomes the sixth state to prohibit texting while behind the wheel of a vehicle. Critics say the fine is small - $20 for the first offense. A survey finds texting while driving is age-related,  the younger the driver the more they do it.

Teen texting while driving is more distracting than cell phone use, and equal to driving while intoxicated DUI, but few laws exist to address the problem. In the absense of legislation, schools and parents need to stop driving while texting or DWT.

Researchers find that the smell of roses made dreams more emotionally pleasant in subjects tested. The smell of rotten eggs had the opposite effect. Now they hope to take those findings to help people who experience nightmares.

In surprising results out of University of Oxford, researchers found elderly, at the low end of normal in vitamin B12, showed the greatest amount of brain shrinkage over a five year period. Meats, salmon and mollusks contain the most B12. Estimates are nearly half of us are deficient.

A new experimental technique called molecular breast imaging (MBI) was three times more effective than traditional mammography at detecting breast cancer tumors in women who have dense breast tissue.
