Allergan has lost a $15 million lawsuit filed by a medical doctor who claimed Botox Cosmetic ruined her life and did not adequately warn the public about the potential side effects. The company plans an appeal.
Allergan, the maker of Botox, is fighting back and wants $460k in legal costs from a mother who unsucessfully sued the drug maker for $60 million.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Thursday warned Allergan Inc., maker of eyelash thickner, Latisse, that it is misleading the public because it downplays the risks associated with the product, including turning light eyes dark.
Botox and similar anti-wrinkle drugs will be required to carry stringent warning labels, prompted by reports of serious adverse events. Botulinum toxins may spread from the injection area to other areas of the body causing symptoms similar to those of botulism, including trouble of breathing and swallowing.
Allergan, the maker of Botox, has high hopes for marketing a glaucoma drug that has a side effect of creating long, dark lashes. Expect Latisse to be approved in 2009 for cosmetic use, despite the side effects.
