According to the newly released 2009 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report, the total healthcare costs of caring for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia are more than triple those of people 65 and older without the disease.

Harvard Medical School researchers have found four new areas that affect the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. They say the findings may eventually help pave the way to new Alzheimer’s treatment options.

A newly discovered gene that increases the risk of late-onset Alzheimer’s by as much as 77 percent has been discovered. It may also present researchers with a target for therapy.
