For more than 20 years, the FDA has been urging the drug and agriculture industries to stop using antibiotics in animal feed and water. With antibiotic resistance at epidemic proportions, the agency is giving the public 60 days to comment before it issues new industry guidance.

The National Institute on Aging is researching ways to slow the aging process. In one experiment, lab mice given the antibiotic, rapamycin, were found to have their life extended, for females by 14 percent, even though the drug was given later in life, at the equivalent of age 60 in humans.

Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza. While it normally does not infect humans, seven cases of human-to-human spread of an unusual strain of swine flu are being reported in the Southwest among people who had no contact with pigs.

Babies born before 37 weeks of age are subject to a host of problems, and researchers are finding that infections in the amniotic fluid may be one cause. Better screening for bacterial and fungal infections mid-pregnancy may help reduce the number of babies born prematurely.

The FDA has requested a "black box" warning, the FDA's most urgent warning, on Cipro and other like antibiotics in the fluoroquinolone class of drugs stating a risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture associated with use.

Use the same disinfectant wipe on a toilet, then a sink, then a keyboard, and you are likely undermining the reason you turned to a disinfectant wipe in the first place, say researchers presenting a study in Boston today. Washing hands with soap and water is still considered the best anti-bacterial method to use in a hospital setting.

A five-month Associated Press investigation that found pharmaceuticals in 24 municipal area's tap water reveals that no one is even checking for them because there are no federal requirements to do so. Senators have expressed shock at the findings and will convene in April to try and address the oversight.

A Swiss study looked at whether pre-testing hospital patients for MRSA and then isolating them would cut down on infection. Surprisingly, that didn't have any impact on the number of MRSA infections which kill about 19,000 annually in the U.S.
