Four of five new drugs are awaiting approval by the FDA and hope to become blockbusters for their pharmaceutical drugmakers and inject new life into profits.

Bayer must pay two farmer $2 million for contaminating their fields with genetically engineered (GE) rice, which contains a novel protein that resists Bayer's herbicide sprayed after the corn grows. The company profits on both ends, but farmers lost their ability to export to countries that ban GE foods.

Yaz and Yasmin oral contraceptives are generating so many lawsuits that the state of New Jersey is considering consolidating them into a class action.

The FDA has demanded that it must screen any ads that German drugmaker, Bayer AG, produces for its oral contraceptive Yaz, after Bayer agreed overpromised the drug could treat symptoms it's not approved to treat. Bayer must spend $20 million on amended ads.

Bayer filed a federal lawsuit against Abbott Laboratories for its best-selling drug, Humira, alleging it infringes a patent granted to Bayer in 1997. Bayer has asked the court to find that Abbott has infringed the patent, which expires on August 2014 and to award damages.

Bayer is combining aspirin with plants and minerals and making false and misleading claims which it must stop, says the FDA. The herbal industry says it's looking for guidelines, not outright censorship.
