Three days after the inauguration of President Barack Obama, his administration is making good on a promise. The first human trials using embryonic stem cells to try and reverse paralysis are set to begin this summer. Friday, the FDA gave the green light to the research trial, the first of its kind.

Seven states and several family planning groups are challenging the Bush administration's "conscience rule" that allows medical workers to opt out of any involvement in reproductive health issues or information if they object. Poor women who seek out clinics would be most affected if the rules are allowed to stand.

Anyone from a cashier to a surgeon involved in the medical field can opt out of treating a patient under a new rule of conscience, approved in the 11th hour by the Bush administration.  Those expected to be most impacted are low-income women who do not have the luxury of shopping around for the practitioner of their choice, or those in the ER.

As the Bush administration winds down, there is a last minute push toward adding pre-emptive language to agencies that oversee everyday products, which essentially block consumer product liability lawsuits.
