Multiple CT scans deliver a cumulative dose of radiation and currently it is up to the patient to talk to their doctor to determine if the image is necessary. The FDA is addressing at least part of the concern.

34 stroke patients who received CT perfusion scans, have been added to the list of radiation overexposed patients at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. This is the third Los Angeles area hospital to report that its scanners delivered excessive radiation. 256 at Cedars-Sinai have been identified as well.

More than 200 patients who went in for a CT scan to diagnose stroke at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles received more than eight times the dose of radiation. The FDA has issued a warning for other hospital that override the General Electric machine settings.
