An AP investigation found U.S. manufacturers, including drug-makers, have legally dumped 271 million pounds of pharmaceuticals into waterways that often provide drinking water.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), proposes improved testing of bottled water to detect bacteria. Consumers receive annual test results regarding any contaminants found in tap water, but the bottled water industry does not disclose its findings.

A newly released report finds some bottled waters are “no different than that of tap water.” Pain medication, fertilizer residue and other various chemicals were found in some major brands of bottled water.
