Kristen LaBrie was arraigned yesterday in Superior Court for withholding medical care from Jeremy, her autistic 9-year-old son who had cancer and died in March.  LaBrie, of Salem, Mass. is facing up to 40 years in prison if convicted on all four charges including attempted murder, child endangerment, and permitting bodily injury to a disabled person.

Being treated for cancer generally means preparing your body for the fight of your life. So supplements, especially antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, beta carotene, or selenium are taken by many patients. This study warns patients they may provide a protective effect to cancer.

Daniel Hauser and his mother who spent a week on the run to avoid forced chemotherapy to treat his cancer, have returned home to Minnesota. They are required to appear in Brown County court today for a custody hearing.

A Minnesota judge gave the parents of 13-year-old Daniel Hauser until May 19 to select an oncologist to treat his Hodgkin's lymphoma. But mom and son did not appear in court yesterday and the judge has issued an arrest warrant.

The parents of 13-year-old Daniel Hauser cannot choose an alternative treatment for his cancer.  Instead the judge says they have until May 19 to select an oncologist and treat his Hodgkin's lymphoma with chemotherapy and radiation.

Patients often have difficulty quitting smoking after they've been diagnosed with cancer. This study, out of West Virginia University found that fewer than half of the smokers surveyed – 44 percent – quit during cancer treatment. And only 62 percent of patients diagnosed with cancer had received any advice about stopping smoking.

Vitamin C supplements and chemotherapy aren't a good combination. Vitamin C reduced the effectiveness of many cancer drugs, found in laboratory and animal studies, according to a team of New York researchers.

An expert FDA panel looking at whether the risks of anemia drugs taken during chemotherapy outweigh the benefit, Thursday voted to keep them on the market with some restrictions. That is good news  for Amgen and Johnson & Johnson.
