Child abuse reports are on the rise as the economy falters, child protection experts around the country report.  Poverty and abuse are linked, but subsidizine rents and day care may take some of the pressure off of stressed families.

A 14-year old Iowa girl was abandoned at an Omaha hospital under Nebraska's safe haven law. She is the 17th child and the first from another state to be abandoned. However, because the child is from Iowa, not Nebraska, the safe haven laws legal protection may not apply.

So far this month, 15 children, most of them teenagers, have been abandoned at hospitals under the state's new Safe Haven Laws.  The dire dilemma underscores how few mental health services are available for these out-of-control teens, and their out-of-options caregivers.

The Omaha man who left his 9 children at an area hospital for protection under the state's Safe Haven laws talks for the first time to an area television station. He says he did it so they wouldn't be homeless.  Parents are routinely dropping off their teens and relinquishing custody - so far 16 in Nebraska since the law went into effect in July. Is this a forecast of more to come or just bad parenting?

9 children ranging in age from 1 to 17, have been abandoned at a Nebraska hospital under the states new Safe Haven law.  The law was intended to protect newborns whose parents want to relinquish custody, but lawmakers didn't forsee teens being abandoned.

"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members," so said spiritual leader, Mahatma Ghandi. If that is so, the U.S. has a lot to live up to. This report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that 90,000 infants are maltreated every year in this country. About one of every 43 infants is in danger, mostly during the first week of their lives.
