The cost between rising obesity rates and rising medical costs is undeniable.  With one quarter of U.S. adults obese, a new study compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Research Triangle Institute, finds obesity and diabetes could cost Americans $147 billion a year.

The results of a new study on childhood obesity shows an alarmingly high rate of American preschoolers are obese. Nearly one of every five children studied were considered obese, with the greatest percentage of obesity seen in American Indian children.

Children who had the most deep, restorative sleep, characterized by rapid eye movement or REM, were the least obese in this study. Researchers in Pittsburgh believe that lack of sleep and hormones contribute to obesity, which has triped in adolescents over the past 30 years.

Children display a dramatic drop in daily exercise according to this U.S. study.  Kids who exercised for three hours a day at the age of nine, dropped to about 45 minutes by the age of 13 and it didn't matter their sex, race or socio-economic background. The implications are huge for childhood obesity and the need for fitness programs as kids become teens in school.
