AstraZeneca is fined $520 million for illegally marketing the anti-psychotic drug, Seroquel for uses not approved by the FDA, including for use among the elderly and adolescents.

Merck along with other drug companies realize that transparency will be required under health care reform. As promised, it has issued a list of doctors who it pays to promote its products and educate the public.

At least 26 scientific papers touting hormone therapy for menopausal women, were secretly produced with the help of ghostwriters and for-hire communications companies, as revealed by unsealed court documents in litigation against Wyeth filed by women who developed breast cancer.

Radio producer, Bill Lichtenstein wants to clear the air. He says he knew nothing about the conflicting interests between the host of "The Infinite Mind" Dr. Fred Goodwin, and GlaxoSmithKline who paid Goodwin more $1 million in speaking fees. NPR has apologized to Lichtenstein for its reporting. 

While parents are finding that the cost of a college education climbs, they might look at who the heavy earners are among college employees.  This survey, from the Chronicle of Higher Education, finds those in the medical schools making multi-millions of dollars, so are some athletic coaches.

Pfizer plans to become the first drugmaker to disclose on its web site the lucrative payments it makes to doctors who promote and research its drugs. The move is intended to promote transparency and regain the trust of the public after revelations that some academics on the take were not disclosing the relationship.

More information is surfacing about conflicting interests involving a Harvard psychiatrist, renowned for promoting antipsychotics, and the research center that bears the name of Johnson & Johnson, which he heads.

The producer of the science radio program, "The Infinite Mind," says he had no idea his host had a consulting arrangement with the pharmaceutical industry he occasionally reported on. That is a violation of his contract, which the producer has posted for everyone to see.

NPR is distancing itself from the independent program, "The Infinite Mind," which it provided to the Sirius Satellite Network, after its host was found to have a lucrative relationship with the pharmaceutical industry.
