Emory University is being investigated by the federal government to determine if the school misled the National Institutes of Health (NIH) when it failed to disclose an Emory psychiatrist’s financial relationship to GlaxoSmithKline.

The FDA has a largely hands-off policy toward requiring compliance with financial disclosures between doctors conducting clinical trial and the drug companies whose products are being tested.  In fact, only one percent of clinical investigators disclose any conflicting interest with drug manufacturers.

Emory University psychiatrist, Dr. Charles Nemeroff, has agreed to step down as chairman of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, following an investigation of conflicts of interest. He will, however, remain a professor in the psychiatry department, focusing on clinical care and teaching.

Cleveland Clinic, one of the nation’s leading medical centers, will announce this week on its Web site, the decision to fully disclose all of its scientists’ and doctors’ financial ties with drug companies and medical device makers.

Three Harvard psychiatrists are the focus of congressional investigators for not reporting about $3 million in payments from pharmaceutical companies, which happen to make drugs the doctors promote for hyperactive children.
