Yaz and Yasmin oral contraceptives are generating so many lawsuits that the state of New Jersey is considering consolidating them into a class action.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first generic version of the Plan B for women ages 17 and under.  Wednesday’s approval will allow the generic version of the morning-after contraceptive pill for women ages 17 and under by prescription only.  

Teens will be able to obtain the morning after pill, even under the age of 18, without a prescription under a District Judge ruling.  The change in policy is in response to a lawsuit that challenged requiring prescriptions for the emergency contraceptive for teens 17 and under.   

The FDA has demanded that it must screen any ads that German drugmaker, Bayer AG, produces for its oral contraceptive Yaz, after Bayer agreed overpromised the drug could treat symptoms it's not approved to treat. Bayer must spend $20 million on amended ads.

The school district in Gloucester, Massachusetts voted unanimously to allow birth control pills and condoms to be made available at the high school, which had at least 18 pregnant students last school year.
