In 1990, members of an Arizona Indian tribe thought they were giving blood samples to study diabetes. The tribe has now won a lawsuit against Arizona State University for failing to adequately inform the donors what their DNA would be used to study.

The founder of Google is underwriting research into the causes of Parkinson's disease with the help of his wife's online DNA collection and analysis company. Segey Brin's mother has Parkinson's disease, and his philanthropy is at least partially motivated by selfish reasons.

Scientists have decoded the entire genome of a cancer patient and found a set of mutations that might have caused the disease or aided its progression. Researchers are hopeful that the newly discovered genes will give them more ways to attack cancer in the future.

A new study by The Tumor Sequencing Project (TSP) consortium identified 26 genes that are frequently mutated in lung adenocarcinoma — an achievement that more than doubles the number of genes known to be associated with the deadly disease.
