A new report published in the Annals of Internal Medicine warns travelers about the importance of knowing the symptoms of venous thromboembolism and staying hydrated and mobile while traveling to prevent the condition from developing on long trips.

Simple leg pain can be a sign of a dangerous blood clot known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Deep vein thrombosis is a potentially deadly condition that affects an estimated 350,000 to 600,000 Americans each year, but it can be easily prevented and effectively treated, according to a new report by the U.S. Surgeon General’s Office.

Tiny particles of pollution in the air, a fraction of the width of a hair, seem to increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis(DVT)  or blood clots in the legs.  The study was done at the Harvard School of Public Health and is the first to suggest that air particulates are not just bad for the heart but also for the veins.
