Hospital or health panels of experts would determine whether medical malpractice took place and what the victim should be offered, in this plan offered by the American Hospital Association. Doctors and hositals say without a neutral panel of experts, they must practice defensive medicine.

The parents of Nataline Sarkisyan cannot sue insurer CIGNA because under ERISA, employee-offered plans can't be challenged on the basis of decisions they make. However, following an incident where a CIGNA employee gave the finger to Mrs. Sarkisyan, the couple can sue for emotional distress.

The Washington Post offered to lobbyists, lawmakers and corporations, nonconfrontational and off-the-record access to reporters for $25,000 to $250,000 -  a direct conflict-of-interest to the Code of Ethics followed by American journalists  - "Deny favored treatment".

General Motors Corp. has agreed to take on future liability claims from defective autos and parts as a means to a quick sale and emergence from Chapter 11 bankruptcy. But the automaker will still leave behind claims by victims of past accidents, including the death of Lexi James, 10, in a 15-passenger Chrysler van.
