The cost between rising obesity rates and rising medical costs is undeniable.  With one quarter of U.S. adults obese, a new study compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Research Triangle Institute, finds obesity and diabetes could cost Americans $147 billion a year.

Mike Tyson's four-year-old daughter is on life support after a treadmill accident Monday.   With more than 25,000 exercise equipment accidents each year, the Consumer Product Safety Commission reports more than a quarter occur to children under the age of five.

Overeating is the primary cause of obesity in the U.S., finds this study. An increase in exercise among Americans over 30 years ago has actually offset what might be an even greater weight gain.  Reduce intake by about 500 calories a day for adults, 350 calories a day for children to offset weight gain.

Three million fitness balls sold under the Bally Total Fitness, Everlast, Valeo and Body Fit brands have been recalled by EB Brands because the balls can burst unexpectedly and cause the user to fall. The company has received 47 reports of injury to date.

Patients who had a left ventricle with diastolic dysfunction when resting had a lower capacity for exercise, finds researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.  While age and sex are not reversible, the heart condition and weight may be.

A large new study that followed more than 21,000 male doctors for two decades, found that even a few extra pounds and a little inactivity increased the risk of heart failure. The findings suggest that overweight men who are not obese still have an increased risk of heart failure.

The health of the nation, as a whole, has declined for the fourth consecutive year. Rising obesity rates, persistence of unhealthy behavior such as alcohol and tobacco use and more are all contributing factors, according to the 19th annual state-by-state rankings, compiled by the American Public Health Association,.
