The FDA has demanded that it must screen any ads that German drugmaker, Bayer AG, produces for its oral contraceptive Yaz, after Bayer agreed overpromised the drug could treat symptoms it's not approved to treat. Bayer must spend $20 million on amended ads.

Patients often have difficulty quitting smoking after they've been diagnosed with cancer. This study, out of West Virginia University found that fewer than half of the smokers surveyed – 44 percent – quit during cancer treatment. And only 62 percent of patients diagnosed with cancer had received any advice about stopping smoking.

The red dye known as carmine or cochineal extract, actually comes from a female beetle and now will have to be labeled, according to the FDA.  A consumer group wanted the FDA to go one step further, putting "insect-derived" on the label, but the FDA opted for the technical terms.

A federal judge, dismissed several lawsuits on behalf of thousands of patients with Medtronic heart-defibrillator wires citing a February decision that federal law “preempts” product-liability lawsuits under state law, effectively precluding such cases.
