The founder of Google is underwriting research into the causes of Parkinson's disease with the help of his wife's online DNA collection and analysis company. Segey Brin's mother has Parkinson's disease, and his philanthropy is at least partially motivated by selfish reasons.

New research suggests that some cases of autism arise from defects in genes that can be turned on or off by mental activity. The findings bring renewed hope to the devastating disorder and may eventually lead to future treatments.
