The FDA plans a new initiative to encourage food manufacturers to gradually reduce the salt in everyday processed foods. Americans consume about three times every day what is considered good for health.

The red dye known as carmine or cochineal extract, actually comes from a female beetle and now will have to be labeled, according to the FDA.  A consumer group wanted the FDA to go one step further, putting "insect-derived" on the label, but the FDA opted for the technical terms.

"Eat This and Not That," is a new book that teaches grocery store shoppers to make better choices by reading labels. Slight alterntions to the typical American diet with foods available in the grocery store, can translate to weight loss, the authors say.
