Sen. Max Baucus had no Republican support for his health reform bill and the White House is lukewarm. The plan does not go far enough for some Democrats, while big insurance says it goes too far in taxing them, even though it does not contain a public option.

With unemployment at 7.2 percent for December and predicted to be over 8 percent in 2009, this report from the Commonwealth Fund finds that only about one in ten former employees take advantage of COBRA, generally those who are in the middle class. Only 3 percent of low-income workers can afford it.

A new report by the U.S. Census Bureau provides estimates of the uninsured population in the United States, providing a breakdown by county, state and demographic groups. The report found Texas had the greatest percentage of uninsured residents under 65, with 26.3 percent of the population having no insurance coverage.

A new report estimates 72 million U.S. adults are having problems paying their medical bills, forcing them to make tough financial choices. The report findings support mounting evidence that the health system is falling short of where it needs to be to ensure good health and economic security.
