A published report in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) finds that 67% of the outpatient centers visited had at least one lapse in infection control. An estimated 100,000 people die from hospital-acquired infections every year.

Kristen Diane Parker, a former Colorado surgery technician accused of stealing syringes filled with pain medication and switching them with used syringes, despite knowing she had hepatitis C, has been denied bail. Parker's actions put nearly 6,000 patients at risk.

As Nevada comes close to completing the inspection of 50 clinics for safety violations that may have put patients in danger—seven clinics have been found to have “major infection control problems, such as the reuse of single dose vials on multiple patients.

Criminal charges are being considered against the Las Vegas Clinic that infected five with hepatitis C as the call goes out to find up to 40,000 other patients of the Endoscopy Center. Meanwhile the licenses of four clinics have been suspended.

Thousands of patients of a Las Vegas clinic may have been exposed to the hepatitis C virus that destroys the liver. The clinic was changing out needles from one patient to another but not syringes, reinfecting the multi-dose vials of medication and underscoring your need to know proper infection control procedures.  

Patients who receive medication using a syringe or needle need to be knowledgable about safe infection control procedures. Unfortunately many clinics are not and that can mean the transmission of HIV or hepatitis C.
