Flame retardants, found in the blood of pregnant women are correlated with lower levels of thyroid stimulating hormone. The malfunction is linked to miscarriage, premature birth and intrauterine growth retardation.

In major announcement, the 50,000 member American Public Health Association is calling for a ban in the use of artificial dairy hormones and growth hormones used in beef cattle, especially in those foods served to school children. Just last year the American Nurses Association also voiced its opposition.

A study out of a London University finds that phthalates in hairspray are linked to a genital birth defect in boys. The UK is ahead of the US in phasing out phthalates, a chemical used to make plastics soft that may be an endocrine disruptor.

Researchers, looking for a simple blood test to determine if a woman is a good candidate for hormone replacement therapy (HRT), find that when the ratio of “bad” to “good” cholesterol is high, she is not a good candidate for HRT of estrogen alone or estrogen plus progestin.
