The new head of the newly created Center for Tobacco Products, under FDA authority, has been named. The center will be able to regulate ingredients in tobacco products for the first time. Big Tobacco is already planning a lawsuit challenging restrictions on advertising.

A new bill giving the federal government sweeping new powers to regulate tobacco passed the Senate. The measure is "a historic victory" and "the strongest action Congress has ever taken to reduce tobacco use, said Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, organization president.

The FDA is considering regulating e-cigarettes, that is electronic cigarettes that deliver a jolt of nicotine as an alternative to smoking tobacco.   Health organizations say they may encourage kids to smoke and they are concerned about inhaling a vaporized form of the drug.

Hormone Replacement Therapy or HRT is still used by women with a reported 30 million prescriptions written each year. Now, findings from the Women's Health Initiative indicate that combining estrogen and progestin can lead to a 59 percent increase in the risk of death from a non-small cell lung cancer.

Even though tar has been reduced in cigarettes over the years, there’s been an increase in a lung tumor called adenocarcinoma. It makes up 65 to 70 percent of newly diagnosed U.S. lung cancers, leading researchers to question why U.S. companies cure tobacco using propane generated heat and nitogen fertilizers.

What if, a urine test could detect smokers at highest risk for developing lung cancer? While it may be years before such a test is made available, if it works, urine-screening may give added motivation to some smokers that have not been able to kick the habit.

Implementing smoke free laws in public places in Pueblo, Colorado, appeared to cut down on the number of hospitalizations for everyone by 41 percent, according to a study by the CDC. The findings echo similar results in other cities.

California’s Air Resources Board will convene this week to review study findings that suggest workers continuously exposed to diesel exhaust from vehicles on the highway, loading docks and city streets have an elevated risk of developing lung cancer compared to other workers.
