New restrictions on tanning beds could prohibit use by very fair-skinned persons as well as subjecting the devices to more scrutiny. An estimated 8,600 die every year from the skin cancer, melanoma, which comes from ultraviolet radiation.

A group of international cancer researchers have moved ultra-violet emitting tanning beds to its highest cancer risk category and labeled them as definitively “carcinogenic to humans” after ruling they are more dangerous than previously suggested.

Florida legislators want to restrict the use of tanning beds for teens under the age of 18. Miss Florida Teen USA, Kayla Collier also supports the proposal after she was diagnosed with melanoma she believes came from a tanning salon.

New research shows a link between a gene involved in vitamin D metabolism and the risk of melanoma, a serious and sometimes fatal skin cancer, according to Italian researchers from the University of Padua.

A new study suggests people who are diagnosed with non-melanoma cancers like that of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma may be at an increased risk of getting other forms of cancer later on in life. Researchers noted the younger the patient at the onset of cancer, the higher the risk.

Tissues give off a scent and researchers have developed a profile to detect skin cancer using an "electronic" nose. This area of research hopes to find skin cancers earlier and with  less invasive methods.

Sunscreens need to be tested and labeling should include information on UVA protection, says two lawmakers who are pushing to have the FDA come up with final rules, so manufacturers can update labels and testing. Without that, consumers are largely left in the dark, assuming their product protects against the damage of all of the sun's rays, when it may not.
