A new study published in the Archives of Neurology suggests the effects of smoking can speed up the progression of multiple sclerosis. Past studies have suggested cigarette smokers are at an increased risk of developing the disease.

Researchers have reversed multiple sclerosis symptoms in early stage patients by using bone marrow stem cell transplants to reset the immune system. The treatment has also shown promising results in people with diabetes and lupus.

The third death associated with the controversial drug Tysabri has been reported. Four cases of a rare brain infection have been reported over the last five months. The drug is used to treat multiple sclerosis but was pulled from the market in 2005, after three patients contracted the virus.

Harvard University researchers have linked the development of multiple sclerosis (MS) in women to Epstein-Barr, a virus known to cause mononucleosis. High levels of antibodies to the Epstein-Barr virus, which infects ninety-five percent of the population by age forty, may increase a woman's chance of developing MS.
