The cost between rising obesity rates and rising medical costs is undeniable.  With one quarter of U.S. adults obese, a new study compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Research Triangle Institute, finds obesity and diabetes could cost Americans $147 billion a year.

Americans in 23 states are reported to be fatter than they were one year ago, according to a new nationwide report. In Mississippi, nearly one-third of adults are considered obese and 44.4 percent of children ages 10 to 17. Where does your state rank?

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has issued new pregnancy weight guidelines for the first time since 1990. In that time, more research has been conducted to analyze the effects of weight gain in pregnancy - on both mother and baby.

Overeating is the primary cause of obesity in the U.S., finds this study. An increase in exercise among Americans over 30 years ago has actually offset what might be an even greater weight gain.  Reduce intake by about 500 calories a day for adults, 350 calories a day for children to offset weight gain.

Nature has its own way of fighting obesity - in the form of brown fat, which helps babies and small mammals stay warm.  A cold environment, just about shivering, will activate brown fat's calorie burning capability, but short of moving to Alaska, these three newly published studies shed light into a promising area of obesity research.

In a newly released study, British researchers suggest women who are obese during pregnancy have a greater risk of giving birth to a baby with certain birth defects, including spina bifida and other defects.

While genetics are a factor in obesity, researchers say, regular exercise and physical activity can trump the effects of a genetic predisposition to being overweight. The puzzling relationship between our genes and lifestyles, which can mean obesity for some and not for others, is yet to be fully understood despite several trials.

If you don’t hit the gym in Alabama, it may cost you. The State Employees’ Insurance Board plans to impose an extra tax of $25 a month on any employees who has high blood pressure, high cholesterol, is overweight and obese. Add that to a smokers' tax of $25 - but not everyone agrees negative incentives work.

Despite public efforts to promote good nutrition and physical activity, Americans are getting fatter. Adult obesity rates have surged across 37 states during the last year, according to an annual state-by-state report.
