Up 10 11 million children of low-income families will be able to be enrolled in SCHIP after the Senate agreed to a version passed recently by the House.  Bipartisan bickering was not what President Obama wanted in this new spirit of cooperation..

President-elect Obama got an early present fulfilling his promise to provide health care for all children when the House passed a version of SCHIP Wednesday. The Senate tackles its own version next week with immigrant children coverage promising to be a focus of debate.

With 9 million children without health care coverage, the children's SCHIP coverage program is at the top of an agenda of the new Obama White House. Also included is more affordable coverage, and increasing stem cell research.

Having employer-sponsored health coverage does not necessarily extend to the children in the family, this published study finds. Millions of children are going without insurance, even when one parent is covered.

While the U.S. Census Bureau in its August report finds that slightly more Americans have health insurance, that is largely due to increasing enrollments from the state and federal government.  As the troubled economy forces employers and states to cut costs further, many fear our insurance crisis is not over.

The Center for Public Integrity is reporting on the big bucks spent by Washington’s largest lobby – the pharmaceutical industry.  In 2007- an all time new record was spent to lobby Congress - $168 million, a 32 percent jump over the previous year.
