Sandwich shop, Subway, is apologizing for a Salmonella outbreak in central Illinois that has hospitalized 24. Everyone has recovered. At least one is suing.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 29 people in 14 states have been diagnosed with Salmonella serotype Chester after eating some brands of Marie Callender’s brand frozen chicken products.

The FDA needs to be remade from the bottom up says a new report from the Institute of Medicine, citing lapses in inspections, standards and authority.

Alfalfa sprouts are now implicated in the latest food recall over Salmonella Newport, a bacterium in human or animal waste. Sprouts present a particular problem because they are eaten raw. 22 people have been sickened.

The FDA is poised to get new regulatory authority and this auditor report is providing the fuel. It shows that more than half of food facilities have gone five years or more without an inspection and 5,000 in the U.S. die annually from contaminated food.

A multistate Salmonella outbreak has sickened 134 people in 38 states and its source has still not been positively identified by federal health officials.

A research team looked at 90 dispensed beverages and found 70 percent had bacterial contamination that would not be allowed in municipal drinking water.

20,000 pounds of beef have been recalled by Cargill, based in Fresno, California over concerns of salmonella. Two people have already become sick over the bacterial contamination. Last August, Cargill recalled almost 826,000 pounds contaminated with the same strain which tends to be antibiotic resistant.

Food-borne infections can have long-lasting health effects that can be as serious as kidney failure, paralysis, hearing or visual impairments, according to a recent study by the Center for Food-borne Illness Research and Prevention.

The Top Ten contaminated foods list is compiled by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Modern agriculture, contaminated waste water, and dirty handling is blamed for many of the cases of bacterial contamination, and proposed improvements are pending in Congress.

Salmonella has contaminated two brands of California grown spinach that were quickly traced to distributors in 12 states and Canada before they made anyone sick.

Manufacturers that process or hold food are now required to report any contamination within 24 hours under new FDA regulations, all in an effort to keep food-borne illness away from the public.

A ground beef recall is impacting nine states and has sickened 21 people with Salmonella Newport, some varieties of which are drug-resistant.

The recall of many products that contain ingredients from Plainview Milk Products coop, illustrates the difficulty of containing food ingredients contaminated with Salmonella.  

It is still a mystery how E. coli 0157 made it into cookie dough found in the Nestle Toll House plant in Virginia- but federal microbiologists have identified it there.  That section of the plant has been closed displacing 250 workers.
