Alfalfa sprouts are now implicated in the latest food recall over Salmonella Newport, a bacterium in human or animal waste. Sprouts present a particular problem because they are eaten raw. 22 people have been sickened.

20,000 pounds of beef have been recalled by Cargill, based in Fresno, California over concerns of salmonella. Two people have already become sick over the bacterial contamination. Last August, Cargill recalled almost 826,000 pounds contaminated with the same strain which tends to be antibiotic resistant.

The Top Ten contaminated foods list is compiled by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Modern agriculture, contaminated waste water, and dirty handling is blamed for many of the cases of bacterial contamination, and proposed improvements are pending in Congress.

It is still a mystery how E. coli 0157 made it into cookie dough found in the Nestle Toll House plant in Virginia- but federal microbiologists have identified it there.  That section of the plant has been closed displacing 250 workers.
