Merck and Schering-Plough agreed on Wednesday to pay $41.5 million to settle class-action lawsuits filed by patients taking the cholesterol drugs Vytorin and Zetia.

With all eyes on Wall Street's hefty bonuses for departing execs, drug maker Schering-Plough is among the tops with $108 million paid to the top 10 departing executives as Merck & Co takes over the company.  

The second major drug company merger in as many months, Merck will acquire Schering-Plough for $41 billion.  Fewer blockbuster drugs, and the promises of healthcare reform are pushing changes in the pharmaceutical industry.  

A trial of the drug Livial, a synthetic alternative to hormone replacement therapy, was halted after researchers found it significantly raises the risk of breast cancer recurrence.

The manufacturers of arthritis drugs have been ordered to strengthen existing warnings on the drugs’ prescribing information and Medication Guides, on the risk of developing a possibly fatal fungal infection.

Food and Drug Administrators are reviewing data that suggests a higher rate of cancer in patients taking the cholesterol-lowering drug Vytorin. Patients are advised to continue taking Vytorin because the cancer link is unclear at this time.
