The FDA needs mandatory recall authority to deal with problematic manufacturing plants such as the one that makes Children's Tylenol, lawmakers concluded at a hearing Thursday. A J & J executive told lawmakers that six key personnel have been let go and that the situation is "unacceptable" though no children have been hurt.

Transparency is defined as a lack of hidden agenda and conditions and the public has an opportunity to tell the FDA just how transparent it wants the agency to be in publishing data and disclosing information about drug and device makers. So far 1,500 have commented.

Dr. Margaret Hamburg, the woman named by the Obama administration to head the Food and Drug Administration, will first have to unload some of her wealth, estimated to be between $20 to $40 million, making her among the wealthies of the president's new appointments.  

Drs. Margaret Hamburg and Joshua Sharfstein, both Harvard Medical School grads, have been chosen by President Obama to be the commissioner and deputy commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.  They still must face confirmation hearings.
