A new government report shows only one-third of adults are getting sufficient sleep or rest every night. According to the CDC, some 50 to 70 million American adults suffer from sleep and wakefulness disorders.

Researchers find that the smell of roses made dreams more emotionally pleasant in subjects tested. The smell of rotten eggs had the opposite effect. Now they hope to take those findings to help people who experience nightmares.

Children who had the most deep, restorative sleep, characterized by rapid eye movement or REM, were the least obese in this study. Researchers in Pittsburgh believe that lack of sleep and hormones contribute to obesity, which has triped in adolescents over the past 30 years.

Sleep apnea results in low blood oxygen levels, and now a study out of UCLA shows that it may lead to brain injury, and disrupted memory and thinking. The damage occurs in regions that help store memory and researchers can measure the impact.
