The one year anniversary of the Tobacco Control Act marks an expanded regulatory role of the FDA in overseeing cigarettes short of banning them or reducing nicotine. Candy flavored cigarettes, misleading labeling and menthol in cigarettes are all top priorities for regulation.

R.J. Reynolds and other tobacco companies have filed suit against federal authorities claiming their right to free speech has been violated by a new tobacco law. The suit seeks to overturn portions of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act.

The new head of the newly created Center for Tobacco Products, under FDA authority, has been named. The center will be able to regulate ingredients in tobacco products for the first time. Big Tobacco is already planning a lawsuit challenging restrictions on advertising.

Researchers find a total of 28 carcinogens identified with smokeless tobacco and even more in snuff. In addition, snuff can lead to nicotine addiction in the same way that cigarette smoking does.

NJOY is one of two brands of electronic cigarettes the FDA found to contain toxins including a component of antifreeze as well as carcinogens. A number of shipments have been seized at the border amid calls for an outright ban.

A new study published in the Archives of Neurology suggests the effects of smoking can speed up the progression of multiple sclerosis. Past studies have suggested cigarette smokers are at an increased risk of developing the disease.

The FDA has received so many reports of Chantix and Zyban users experiencing depression, hostility, agitation, and suicidal thoughts and commiting acts of suicide, that today the agency issued a Public Health Advisory that the smoking cessation drugs will be required to carry a stronger warning label.

A new bill giving the federal government sweeping new powers to regulate tobacco passed the Senate. The measure is "a historic victory" and "the strongest action Congress has ever taken to reduce tobacco use, said Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, organization president.

The FDA is considering regulating e-cigarettes, that is electronic cigarettes that deliver a jolt of nicotine as an alternative to smoking tobacco.   Health organizations say they may encourage kids to smoke and they are concerned about inhaling a vaporized form of the drug.

Research shows that gender makes women more vulnerable to the effects of smoking than previously known. Lung damage hits women at an earlier age and after less time smoking, dispelling the myth that smoking a few cigarettes is safer.
