Alfalfa sprouts are now implicated in the latest food recall over Salmonella Newport, a bacterium in human or animal waste. Sprouts present a particular problem because they are eaten raw. 22 people have been sickened.

Stay away from the alfalfa sprouts until a contamination by Salmonella Saintpaul is identified and cleared up, warns federal health officials. 31 cases in six states are linked to the foodborne illness. The warning includes sprout combinations as they may contain the alfalfa seed.

Alfalfa sprouts contaminated with Salmonella are being recalled from store shelves and retailers in three states in the Northwest and Alaska after 13 people were sickened and two hospitalized. Industrialized agriculture may be to blame.
