Some glucose test strips cannot distinguish between blood glucose and other sugars. As a result, they reflect elevated readings potentially masking significant hypoglycemia. 13 deaths are reported to the FDA which advises avoiding monitors with the GDH-PQQ glucose test strips.

Spikes in blood sugar levels can take a toll on memory by affecting the dentate gyrus, a region of the brain within the hippocampus that helps to form memories. The effects can be seen even when levels of blood sugar, or glucose, are only moderately elevated, a finding that may help to explain normal age-related cognitive decline

Consuming huge amounts of sugar after starvation caused rats to display the same addictive behaviors as you'd see with heroin or cocaine. That may explain why some people crave sugar and cannot stop, even when they know they should.
