Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, is deficient in at least six million U.S. children, reports this study from Harvard and published in the journal Pediatrics. Given its increasing recognition in health maintenance, the study author says this should be a call to action.

Oprah and Dr. Oz have filed more than 40 complaints against marketers of the acai berry to stop them from using the famous duo for promotional purposes. They say there is no science that supports the claim the berry promotes weight loss.

21 prized polo horses from Venezuela died suddenly in Florida this past weekend, and no one knew the cause until it revealed today they were given a vitamin supplement, erroneously mixed by an Ocala, Florida pharmacy that likely caused their deaths.

The FDA is expanding its warning about tainted weight loss products that contain undeclared, active pharmaceutical ingredients. In other words, the ingredients are not mentioned on the label and pose serious health risks including, heart attack, stroke and seizures.

The FDA has sent a warning letter to Coca-Cola about its Diet Coke Plus. Coke says the product is a "good source of several essential vitamins and minerals," namely B3, B12, zinc and magnesium.  But the FDA isn't buying it.

The FDA is issuing a warning about diet pills, especially those with "natural"  or "herbal" ingredients. Many contain potentially dangerous ingredients that are not FDA approved and slipped in under, "supplements" which are not regulated.

Airborne Health Inc. did not admit any wrongdoing, but they have agreed to pay $7 million to settle investigations by 32 state attorneys general and the District of Columbia over past marketing and labeling of its dietary supplement products.

Glucosamine and chrondroitin offer many sufferers of osteoarthritis relief from pain. But research from the National Institutes of Health, Alternative Medicine division find that the natural supplements have mixed results, largely disappointing.  Some of the researchers take fees from pharmaceutical giants, the research discloses.

Four high school students from Council Rock High School in Newton, Pennsylvania have been hospitalized for possible overdoses after ingesting an herbal supplement known as “SNURF.” It is not entirely clear what ingredients are in Snurf products, but reported symptoms point to dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant widely abused among teens.

In surprising results out of University of Oxford, researchers found elderly, at the low end of normal in vitamin B12, showed the greatest amount of brain shrinkage over a five year period. Meats, salmon and mollusks contain the most B12. Estimates are nearly half of us are deficient.

Some sort of prayer or meditation is used by the majority of cancer patients, the American Cancer Society finds. Complementary and alternative medicine is being sought out by cancer sufferers including  relaxation, faith and supplements.
