A survey of 1,231 doctors finds that 91 percent believe that doctors order more tests in order to protect themselves from medical malpractice lawsuits. A CBO survey had found that medical malpractice lawsuits amount to less than 2 percent of overall healthcare spending.

The news keeps getting worse for Johnson & Johnson and its McNeil Consumer Healthcare division. The company has announced an expanded recall for Benadryl allergy tablets and Extra Strength Tylenol gels. This is a follow-up to a January recall after consumers complained of musty or moldy odors.

PediaCare cold medications have been recalled because they were produced at the same problematic manufacturing plant as the recently recalled Children's Tylenol products. The FDA says criminal sanctions are being considered against McNeil/Johnson & Johnson.

The FDA needs mandatory recall authority to deal with problematic manufacturing plants such as the one that makes Children's Tylenol, lawmakers concluded at a hearing Thursday. A J & J executive told lawmakers that six key personnel have been let go and that the situation is "unacceptable" though no children have been hurt.

The head of Johnson & Johnson is expected to be present at a Thursday Congressional committee hearing to further explore manufacturing lapses at a company plant that led to a recall of 40 children's pain and allergy over-the-counter medications. Meanwhile, the FDA is trying to sort out adverse events coming into the agency from worried parents.

Expect a round of positive PR even though McNeil's Fort Washington, Pennsylvania manufacturing plant remains closed and the source and type of contaminant of childrens over-the-counter cold and allergy meds remains a mystery.

McNeil Healthcare has issued a voluntary recall of 43 Tylenol children's products due to purity and potency problems. This is the third recall by the company for production problems in recent months.

A critic of the MRI drug, Omniscan, has been sued by GE Healthcare over his allegedly libelous words. Henrik Thomsen warned other researchers how the drug was linked to a rare, crippling, and potentially fatal skin disease, NSF. Many say it's Britain's draconian libel laws that are now being used to keep him quiet.

Tylenol is removing 21 children's products from store shelves because of a bacterial contamination found in some of the inactive ingredients. None of the finished product reportedly has the bacteria, but check the lot numbers and return it for a new product.
