Even though tar has been reduced in cigarettes over the years, there’s been an increase in a lung tumor called adenocarcinoma. It makes up 65 to 70 percent of newly diagnosed U.S. lung cancers, leading researchers to question why U.S. companies cure tobacco using propane generated heat and nitogen fertilizers.

Lawmakers are planning again to try to pass legislation that would require government regulation of cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Lawmakers are making it mandatory for stores to sell only fire safe and slow-burning cigarettes. The paper on fire safe cigarettes is thicker in two spots so they will go out if not puffed when they burn to these spots. The idea is to prevent fires caused when cigarettes are dropped or set aside.

Saying things like they find it a "dirty habit," increasingly teens are turning away from smoking, according to this survey from the University of Michigan of 45,000 high school students.  That reflects the trends among adults, although the number of deaths from smoking are on the rise.

The first of thousands of lawsuits against Big Tobacco is being heard in Florida following the dismantling of the $145 billion Engle case. Plaintiffs will not have to prove that the companies put out a defective product and committed fraud and that cigarettes cause at least 16 diseases. They will have to prove they were addicted to smoking. Plan on Big Tobacco to discredit the plaintiffs.

The Bush administration "strongly” opposes the effort to give the Food and Drug Administration regulatory authority over tobacco. The bill is supported by both US Chambers; however, if the legislation passes both House and Senate, the Bush administration is most likely to veto it.

Tobacco companies use menthol to make some cigarette brands more appealing to young smokers, by making them taste less harsh, say researchers at Harvard School of public Health in the US.
