Gardasil will not become part of the childhood vaccination schedule for boys to prevent against genital warts, despite the fact that earlier this month the FDA recommended its use for boys.

The nasal spray, FluMist, will be available beginning next week to help fight the swine flu. Vaccines are not expected from five manufacturers until mid-October. the five vaccine makers are immune from liability in case there are adverse effects.

President-elect Obama got an early present fulfilling his promise to provide health care for all children when the House passed a version of SCHIP Wednesday. The Senate tackles its own version next week with immigrant children coverage promising to be a focus of debate.

The latest issue of the journal Pediatrics includes its new immunization schedule for kids and an analysis that harshly criticizes a popular book that poses an alternative vaccine schedule for infants and toddlers, calling it “flawed and misguided, stating it puts children at considerable risk of preventable diseases.

In a shocking break with the medical community, Dr. Bernadine Healy, former head of the NIH, says the medical community has been too quick to dismiss parents concerns of an autism-vaccine link. It deserves study she says and was concerned by a 2004 report that said look no further. Some children should be included in a sub-set that never get vaccines or receive them on an alternate schedule, she believes.

Sweden is the best place for mothers and by implication the survival of their infants according to a Save the Children annual report. Ethiopia is among the worst places where 84 percent of children never receive the basics in medical care.
