Police says an initial inquiry into white powder sent in a dozen envelopes to the WSJ lower Manhattan headquarters appears to be flour. Meanwhile the same day, Harvard's Alan Dershowitz received a similar envelope with the same postmark from Knoxville, Tenn. It too is being evaluated. No one was injured in either incident.

The editorial and executive offices of the Wall Street Journal in lower Manhattan received about 10 envelopes with mysterious white powder this afternoon, essentially shutting down most of the operations.  Hazardous materials teams are trying to figure out the substance. Since the 2001 anthrax poisonings, many hoax envelopes have been sent to media and financial institutions.

Was it business as usual, complicated by some bad financial decisions, or was there outright fraud involved in the collapse of the U.S. financial markets?  The FBI should have launched a full-scale investigation by now, but the bureau's domestic division has gone unfunded since 9/11.
